Faz algum tempo que uns desenvolvedores do Debian têm se debruçado sobre um projeto "debian-live", criando um conjunto de ferramentas pra que as pessoas façam live-cds do jeito que elas quiserem. Você pode pegar paradas e ver as últimas notícias do projeto aqui.
E não é que hoje lançaram finalmente uma versão beta 1?

Parece até uma resposta ao gNewSense, na minha mente paranóica.
Tá aí agora. Você pode usar essa ferramenta (que suponho se livre), pra selecionar só os pacotes que você realmente considerar livre, você pessoalmente, e criar o seu live CD.
Eu mesmo vou montar um sem Gnome, nem KDE nem xfce, vou fazer um livecd com vtwm!!!
E com IceWeasel, já que a logomarca do Firefox infelizmente não é livre, né... Me pergunto, por acaso o gNewSense não vem com o Firefox, ou eles não consideraram isto uma nuisance?
Este é o Debian way. Não é fazer uma distro livre, é fazer um pacote que você instala com apt, e te ajuda a fazer Live-CDs do jeito que você quiser. Pode até fazer um Live CD com os tais pacotes do Debian-Live dentro, pra gerar novos Live-CDs sob demanda, ao vivo. Isso não é simplesmente DOIDO DEMAIS?
Quem sabe faz ao vivo, e tudo com apt.

Na verdade a notícia do Slashdot foi absurdamente exagerada. O nível das notícias de lá está lentamente se tornando tão ruim quanto o dos comentários.
A distro nada mais é do que um Live-CD organizado pelo princípio de possuir apenas software estritamente free. A necessidade de derivar a partir do Ubuntu é antes de mais nada porque desejava-se um Live-CD, e isso o Debian (a fonte do próprio Ubuntu) não é. Só isso.
Aí misture-se a isso afirmações exageradas sobre Ubuntu ser muuuito mais bem-apessoado q qualquer outra distro, e sobre ser fundamentaaaal pro futuro da humanidade que todos possuam computadores com apeeeenas coisas absolutaemnte liiivres instaladas. Aí você tem uma receita pra uma notícia bombástica pra irritar o Nicolau.
No final das contas vc pode perfeitamente pegar esse negócio aí e instalar uns skype e varicad da vida com o bom e velho dpkg, e possivelmente colocar as fontes de pacotes contrib e non-free à disposição, inclusive os pacotes do Marillat... Nada diferente de usar Debian, exceto que deve possuir o "emerge" que é muuuuito mais fácil de usar do que apt, e vem num Live-CD que faz a instalação mais prazerosa pra usuários new-school.

Fiquei meio encafifado com essa tal distro "patrocinada" pela FSF. Aqui vai um "reprint" do meu "comment"que eu "postei" no slashdot.

To me this feels just lame. It's a bit like the dream of the programming language that will forbid programmers to create bad code. "Oh, Debian is baaad, dude, it ALLOWS people to install proprietary filthy bits if that even crosses their minds. Let's do this new distro that kinda certifies every little file in the HD and if it meets something different from fully 100% GPL compatible, it just goes BOOM, explodes the box!!"
People must CHOOSE to have free software all the time, they must do so KNOWINGLY. They must be FACED with the alternative all the time, must be tempted by the devil all the time. That is how we go on with our lives. Yes, it is difficult.
The idea that we need a new "pure" distro instead of Debian (or many others) is ludicrous to me. People should just LEARN about how to use APT, and understand how that affect their lives, instead of look for a distro that "handle all that" for you, and send you to user heaven when you die without hassles.
This is a proposal to create alienated users, just like the dark side already does. It's playing by their rules. I've seen a lot of this in other contexts, it happens sooner or later.
Programming languages, like distros, are TOOLS. When we put limits to them, you are making a sin. That is the sin the proprietary world do all the time... Tools are extensions to our bodies and souls, and by limiting them, thei are crippling us. This distro is a limited distro. It was born from an idea of limiting what can (or should) be done. This PRINCIPLE is wrong, and should not be followed.
How much time before people get this and subvert it, find ways to install this or that proprietary thing? It will be sort of a "pirated" gNewSense, with probably an even worse name. So there will be them, the great "freedom fighters" who will "liberate" gNewSense for the people to use and finally do what they will, instead of strictly what the creators of the distro had in mind... A "people's" version of a "GPL" version of a "people's" version of Debian...
Can't you SERIOUSLY not install Debian and NOT include the contrib and non-free sources (which are not default BTW) and then NOT install skype, or pirated windows binaries or pirated Mathematica or SNES ROMs or Leisure Suit Larry or whatever? Just do that, do NOT use proprietary, instead of asking for your big brother to watch over you.
Perhaps they like the spirit of this in Venezuela, or other countries where Stallman has been going to a lot lately. I sure don't like it here in Brazil. But what do I know? I haven't tried many distros in my life. I only switched from FreeBSD to Debian after I asked RMS himself for suggestions, and I liked it ever since. He did look a bit uncomphortable at the time by suggesting it, I believe he still didn't find it the perfect distro. I honestly hope he doesn't find THIS the perfect one,and feels at least a bit uncomphortable by suggestig it too...
